What duct sealing actually fixes in a Lenexa house

One room stays warm. The register barely moves a sheet of paper. Dust reappears days after cleaning. Those three symptoms usually point to leakage, not a weak blower. Supply loss shows up as low airflow. Return loss shows up as dust, because the return is drinking whatever air surrounds it.

Pre-1985 basements here run galvanized trunk with S-and-drive joints and crimped round takeoffs. Those slip joints leak at the seams and at every spin-in collar. Panned floor-joist returns are the bigger problem. The joist bay itself is the duct, so it pulls subfloor gaps, insulation fiber and basement moisture straight into the air handler. You cannot seal that from inside. The fix is mastic and sheet metal at the pan edges, blocking at the bay ends, and sealing the subfloor penetrations above.

Attic flex is a different job. The inner liner must be clamped on the collar, and the outer vapor jacket taped back over it. When that jacket is left open, humid attic air reaches cold metal and you get sweat at the boot and a ceiling stain.

Sealing is wrong sometimes. Crushed flex, rusted-through trunk, or ducts packed with remodel drywall fines need replacement or cleaning first. Sealing them just locks the problem in.
