Why Lenexa duct systems load up in the first place

Most of it starts at the return. Homes built in the 1950s through the 70s here often use panned floor-joist returns: sheet metal nailed across the open joist bay. That bay is not sealed. It pulls basement air, insulation fiber, dryer lint and pet dander straight into the blower. Galvanized trunk lines in basement ceilings, pre-1985, with round pipe and crimped takeoffs, then drop fine silt in the first few feet of supply.

Newer Lenexa builds have the opposite problem. R-6 and R-8 flex runs off a sheet metal plenum, sitting in an unconditioned attic. Summer attic temps reach 130–150°F. Register boots sweat. Flex sags between supports or gets crushed by stored boxes, and airflow drops long before anyone blames dust.

Cleaning is negative air plus mechanical agitation, with access cut into the trunk. The musty smell in July and August usually lives on the cold-side evaporator coil and plenum interior, not in the branch runs. That gets inspected separately.

Pull one floor register and look down the boot. Gray felt means it is time. Crawlspace runs wicking moisture off bare soil need a ground cover first. Cleaning alone will not hold.
